Fusion Tango Brings Next Generation of Argentinean Dancers and Musicians To Ramapo College
(Mahwah) – Start with the passion, seduction and intricate footwork of traditional tango, mix in some modern dance, stunning partnering and lifts, and the live music of young Argentine composers Oscar Feldman and Fernando Otero, and you’ve got Fusion Tango, in a performance at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Saturday, October 5 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater. This electric evening will deliver the music and dance of the next generation of Argentine tango.
Prior to the performance, tango workshops are scheduled Friday October 4 at 1:15 p.m. and Saturday October 5 at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Rehearsal Hall. Fusion Tango dancer Sandra Antognazzi will take participants on a step-by-step journey toward mastering the tango.
Fusion Tango, a New York-based Argentine quartet, have created an innovative show, immersed in nostalgia, which tells the stories of men and women, their dreams and desires, in a non-literal way. Amidst a shared seduction the man and the woman struggle, as the balance of power shifts from one to another. The attitude of surrender and devotion become clear in the visual beauty of the dance of tango. “We’re trying to bring together different generations to learn about different cultures,” says Berrie Center Director Jane Stein. “This is a way to connect the campus community with the outside community; to explore other cultures and have fun.”
Featured guest artists will include tango star Pablo Pugliese, the son of Esther and Mingo, two of the most important milongueros alive today – and Alessandra Prosperri, soloist with the Martha Graham Company. Walter Perez and Sandra Antognazzi are co-directors of Fusion Tango. Antognazzi is an alumna of celebrated Argentine choreographer Ana Maria Stekelman; Perez trained with outstanding tango masters Juan Carlos Copes, Rodolfo Dinzel and Pepito Avellaneda. The music will be provided by a quartet of outstanding and renowned Argentine musicians, including Oscar Feldman and Pablo Aslan.
Admission for the performance is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. Tickets for the workshops are $2. The Sharp Theater and the Rehearsal Studio are located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center at Ramapo College. For additional information, call (201) 684-7844.
