Ramapo College Team Wins First Place In Student Programming Contest
(Mahwah) A team of computer science students from Ramapo College of New Jersey won the first prize in the Student Programming Contest held at the Northeastern conference of the Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges held in Worcester, MA on April 19, 2002. In addition Dr. Amruth Kumar, professor of computer science at Ramapo, won the "best-paper" award at the conference for his presentation, "Prolog for Imperative Programmers."
The winning team of computer science students included Oleg Kikin, Rumen Kostadinov and Stefan Kasabov. A total of 29 teams representing 22 schools including Wellesley College, Wheaton College, Middlebury College, Haverford College, Smith College, Trinity College, SUNY Potsdam, and a dozen other schools in the northeast participated in the competition.
During the competition, teams were asked to solve seven problems in three hours. The team solving the most would be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the team solving the problems in the least amount of time would win. The Ramapo Team took 35 fewer minutes than their nearest competitor.
