Thanks to the People of Ramapo

When invited to give my thoughts and impressions of the College for this special Annual Report edition of Ramapo Magazine, I was delighted to be able to participate. My immediate reaction was that writing this article would give me the opportunity to recognize the school's many accomplishments of recent years. However, as I sat and began to list these accomplishments, the thought occurred to me that all the magazine's other writers would probably expound on these same achievements. And so, I have chosen instead to write about the people who make Ramapo what it is; the people responsible for all of these accomplishments and who are worthy of, but rarely receive, the recognition they deserve.

I'm sure others will write about the school's physical plant expansion, the Berrie Center, Oak Hall, and our major investment in computer technology and computer access. I'm equally sure others will recognize the excellent results of our Middle States Association evaluation, the many new graduate and undergraduate programs being offered, the improvements in enrollment, and the fund-raising efforts by the volunteers of the Ramapo College Foundation. And most importantly, much will be written about the efforts and successes of Dr. Robert Scott, our past president, without whom most of what we see today would not have been possible.

But behind all these achievements are the tireless and unspoken efforts of people, the people who make up the Ramapo community and who are Ramapo! There are many constituencies that make up our community: the administration, faculty, staff, student body, the College Trustees, the Ramapo College Foundation, the Alumni Association, Friends of Ramapo, and the countless volunteers who give of their time every day. It is the effort of these people that I want to recognize, and it is this group, too many to mention individually, whom I want to thank.

Most of us take for granted the construction of a performing arts center or a new dormitory. Yet how many of us understand or appreciate the countless days, nights, and weekends put in by the members of our administration and staff responsible for planning and overseeing these projects " Equally, how many of us appreciate the efforts of the volunteers of the Foundation who worked so hard to raise the funds for these and other planned projects on our campus"

Most of us take for granted the extraordinary achievements we have seen in enrollment numbers and quality. Yet how many of us know and appreciate the role played by volunteer students in this success "How many know of the efforts of student volunteers recruiting at local high schools and working so hard running tours and greeting interested high school students and their parents"

Many of us take for granted the enviable academic reputation Ramapo has built over the years and the excellent relationships that exist between our students and faculty. Yet how many of us understand and appreciate that this reputation and these relationships exist only because of the devotion and hard work put in by our faculty members?

Every achievement you will read about in other sections of this Annual Report has a real, lasting effect in the lives of students, and these achievements set us a level above other colleges here in New Jersey. More importantly, every achievement you will read about is the result of the efforts of the people of Ramapo!

On behalf of my fellow board members, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you who has given their time to make Ramapo the wonderful community that it is. I would like to be able to recognize each of you by name and accomplishment, but space does not permit that luxury. But you know who you are and, more importantly, we know who you are - you are Ramapo College!
