Pulitzer Prize-winning author and science writer Natalie Angier was the guest speaker at Ramapo College's 2008 Opening Convocation.  The Convocation was held in the Arena of the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center located on campus.

In her book "The Canon," Angier draws on conversations with hundreds of the world's top scientists and her work at The New York Times to create an entertaining guide to scientific literacy.  From stem cells and bird flu to evolution and global warming, the book helps readers understand scientific issues of the times.

All incoming freshmen of Ramapo College's Class of 2012 read "The Canon" over the summer and discussed the book in their First Year Seminar Course.  The course introduces students to college-level work and prepares them for the subsequent courses they will take.  Opening Convocation provides an opportunity for students to learn what drives this successful author and how scientific literacy is vital to their education.
