Faculty Development Day

September 21, 2016 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Faculty Development Day is a concentrated block of time for instructors to join together, discuss teaching, and develop their skills.  Multiple offerings will be scheduled at the same time to provide as many opportunities for participation as possible.  All are encouraged to attend!

Faculty Development Day is co-sponsored by the Faculty Resource Center and the Instructional Design Center (IDC).  However, other groups on campus are encouraged to offer development opportunities on this day as well!

Please be sure to continue to check out this page for more updates as the date approaches!

12:30-1:30 p.m.

Option A: Discussion Circle: Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric (B-225)
This session will be a discussion of the Summer 2016 Common Reading Citizen: An American Lyric (by Claudia Rankine).

Option B: Flipping the Classroom 2.0  (B-226)
This workshop goes into depth on strategies and resources for getting the most out of flipping the classroom. Topics include recording and producing instructional videos, scheduling and organizing flipped lessons, and developing innovative classroom projects. This workshop is geared toward instructors with some experience with flipping, but novice flippers are welcome to attend.

1:30-2:30 p.m.

Option A: Group Projects: What Students Want; What You Can Do (B-225)
“I hate group projects!” We have all heard this familiar refrain from students – often because they can be difficult experiences for everyone involved. However, the ability to work with others is a crucial skill in the world – so it is something important for us to teach to our students.  This session presents results from a study I conducted on student preferences of group projects.  The results of this study offer practical guidelines (based on empirical data as well as previous research on the top) as to how instructors can design their group project assignments to make them as painless as possible (so that the students can focus on learning!).

Presented by Nick Salter, SSHS

Option B: Boost Your PowerPoint (B-226)
For decades now PowerPoint has been the standard presentation tool. But PowerPoint can be much more than boring templates and bullet points. This workshop provides a PowerPoint boost by introducing picture fades, color contrasts, and transition options.

2:30-3:30 p.m.

Option A: Strategies for Getting Students to Read (B-225)
This round-table discussion will focus on sharing strategies that get students to complete assigned readings.  Pick up ideas from your colleagues and bring strategies that have worked for you.  Increasing student’s motivation to read, types of readings, and ways to review and discuss the readings will be addressed.

This session will be facilitated by Ramon Reyes and Priscilla Tovey-Van Aulen of the Center for Reading and Writing.

Option B: New Apps for the Classroom (B-226)
There are more new apps available for the college classroom than ever more. This workshop introduces some of the most promising apps related to projects, research, and assessment. Bring your mobile device to participate!
