College Honors: Continuing Honors Student Resources

Resources for Continuing Students

For College Honors Students Enrolled before September 2009:

Your requirements in the College Honors Program remain the same: you may complete your College Honors experience in two ways (1) Complete three Honors-Options (H-Options) within your courses. H-Options may include one 200 level course with the other two courses being at the 300 or 400 level and receive a Certificate in Honors or, (2) Complete the H-Options and an Honors Project in your senior year. In the spirit of the new curriculum being implemented commencing September 2009, we are emphasizing the following aspects in evaluating H-Option proposals as well as the Honors Project required for Graduation with Honors:

  1. The proposed work should be interesting to you, as student, as relevant to future work.  This means any H-Option should help you discern work for the Honors Project or for work after graduation in graduate school or professional work. Likewise, any Honors Project should be based on your own curiosity and learning.  The proposals submitted should reflect this interest.

  2. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged. Keep this in mind when selecting your H-Option courses and Honors Project additional Readers.

  3. For the six-credit Honors Project requirement, you may double-count credits in a senior capstone thesis, research or project requirement within your major if that work is sufficient as partial completion of the Honors Project.  These decisions requiring Course Substitutions will be made case by case by the College Honors Director in consultation with students and their faculty mentors in the capstones.

  4. In May 2009, we will sponsor our first College Honors Symposium. Any of you completing Honors Projects this year are eligible to submit your work for consideration.  More direction on how to do this will follow as we move closer to the Spring term.

For College Honors Students who entered the Program prior to Fall 2009:

In Fall 2008 we launched pilot Honors courses in preparation for implementation of our new College Honors curriculum commencing September 2009. Each course will be piloted one year in advance of its official offering. Because you are admitted to the existing program, you have an exciting option: you are able to structure your work to opt into the new curriculum if you so decide. How will this work?

First, any pilot Honors-Only course you take, will count as an H-Option course, should you decide to complete the existing curriculum requirements. You are strongly encouraged to enroll in three of these courses if you decide to complete the existing requirements. Students who enroll after Fall 2009 will be given priority in the regular Honors-Only courses since these are required for completion of the program. Other students will be admitted as spaces are available.

Second, if you decide to complete the sequence of four Honors-only courses piloted for the new curriculum, you may opt in to that curriculum for the purpose of completing Honors in the Major. This would give you access to additional resources for presenting your own work.

No need to decide now. Do stay in touch with the Director of Honors or your faculty mentor about your thoughts on this decision as you move through the coursework.

Message from the Student Executive Committee:

Dara MonaschHello everyone and, on behalf of the Student Executive Committee, welcome to the new College Honors website! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Dara Monasch. I am a senior here at Ramapo, and I have been a member of College Honors since my second semester of freshman year. Being a participant in Honors education is an invaluable collegiate experience, and one that I hope you are either currently enjoying, or considering. The education you receive here at Ramapo is complemented by membership in College Honors. Our program is currently at a wonderful juncture - the faculty and students are working together to create a much more comprehensive, community oriented experience. I am so excited to be a part of this change, and I hope to see you soon at a meeting, in a class, or in the brand new Honors Lounge!  The members of the executive committee are working to make this year a memorable one for everyone in the program, so please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
