DAC Archived Reports: Summer 2006
The Diversity Action Committee Implementation Team met on August 23, July 25, 26 and June 19 to outline a five-year action plan that will be presented to the campus community this fall.
The DAC Town Hall meetings will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6 from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Trustees Pavilion.
The new DAC is now expanded to more than 20 members representing every segment of the campus community. Professors Kay Fowler (SSHS) and Edna Negrón (CA) succeed Dr. Patrick Chang as the new co-chairs of the DAC.
This summer, the DAC team worked on the draft of an Implementation Plan for Diversity, Equity and Community based on the results of the Campus Climate Survey of 2005, as well as other previous reports conducted on campus in recent years. A full copy of the Campus Climate Survey is available in the library.
The DAC team formed seven subcommittees to propose actionable items to improve diversity and equity in the following areas: curriculum and pedagogy; scholarship, policies; recruitment and retention of students; recruitment and retention of faculty and staff; inter-intra group relations and external relations.
The subcommittees met separately in June, July and August proposed action items that were documented on grids and compiled by consultant Sue Rankin and Associates. On August 23, the DAC Team met and agreed on 14 priority items in a draft document with more than 40 action items to be presented to the campus community for public comment on Sept. 6. There other action items which can be pursued simultaneously or within the five-year timeframe.
The DAC Implementation Team prioritized items and presented them to President Peter Mercer in August. The DAC will consider public comments and recommendations before the Action Plan is final. The DAC expects that some of the items will be acted on as early as this academic year. Other items will require more research and time to organize and implement.
The DAC is also working on requests for diversity leadership training from Student Government Association, Residence Life and a program for the Omega Phi Chi Sorority Incorporated.
