President's Message on the Survey
December 5, 2005
Re: Campus Climate Survey
I am pleased to report that the October/November administration of the
Campus Climate Survey was a resounding success.
I thank everyone who participated. Your input has provided Ramapo with a highly reliable sampling of the experiences and perceptions of individuals and groups from throughout campus.
The consultant is analyzing the data and will report to the Diversity Action Committee some time in February 2006.
Again, thank you for your response to this important college initiative. For your information, below is a breakdown of those who participated in the survey:

President's Message on Diversity Action Committee Membership
December 12, 2005
Re: Diversity Action Committee Membership
In July 2004, while serving as interim president, Dr. Pfeiffer called for
volunteers to serve on a new committee to be called the Diversity Action
Committee (DAC). Fifty volunteers communicated their interest and 10 were
chosen to serve. These first 10 members who have been serving on the
committee since fall 2004 are ready to begin rotating the responsibilities
of this hands-on committee to other interested colleagues.
There are two openings on the committee. If you previously communicated
interest in serving on the DAC, and would like to be considered again,
please notify the chair of the committee, Dr. Patrick Chang, by e-mail at
pchang@ramapo.edu by February 1, 2006. This is also an opportunity to
provide any updates to your original submission.
For anyone new to campus since July 2004 who is interested in serving,
please visit the DAC Intranet site at
http://guide.ramapo.edu/DAC/index.html to learn more about the
committee’s work. Then, please submit a brief statement outlining your
interest by February 1, 2006 to Dr. Chang.
I have asked the DAC members to review all submissions and make
recommendations to me for the next round of members. The committee meets
weekly for one hour in the fall and spring semesters and monthly in the
summer. Please note that this is a roll-up-your-sleeves committee that
requires members to contribute actively.
I look forward to welcoming the newest members.

Progress Report
DAC Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee Progress 2005:
During the last four months, the Diversity Action Committee’s Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee has been busy working on the development of an instrument that aims to measure how the Ramapo College community interacts, learns, teaches, socializes and does business on campus. With input from various constituents representing the total campus community, the DAC Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee aims to administer a survey this fall.
Please click on this link for a timeline of the Ramapo Campus Climate Assessment Project.
The subcommittee has been working with consultant, Sue Rankin & Associates Consulting, a Pennsylvania-based firm which has conducted more than 40 such surveys across the country’s colleges and universities. The subcommittee members are: Prof. Ruma Sen, Prof. Jill Weiss, Asha Mehta of the Equal Opportunity Fund (EOF) office, Mandy Restivo, director of the Women’s Center and assistant director of Greek Affairs and Kylene Milligan, student DAC representative. Acting Vice Provost Pat Chang, the DAC chair, and Babette Varano, director of Institutional Research, are advisors. Prof. Edna Negrón, a DAC member, chairs the subcommittee.
Progress Summary at a Glance:
May – The Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee began conducting student fact-finding groups to identify themes of interest and concern connected to campus climate. More than 40 students volunteered to participate.
June – The Board of Trustees in June voted to hire Sue Rankin & Associates after the DAC researched consultants and posted a competitive bid. The Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee and Rankin & Associates planned fact-finding sessions for the first phase of survey development. The Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee coordinated with the Ramapo the Office of the President, staff administrators and the Faculty Assembly to set up small group discussions with volunteers. The discussions were conducted by Rankin & Associates facilitators.
The Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee began work on survey questions.
July – On July 25 and 26, the Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee and Rankin & Associates conducted about 20 small group fact-finding sessions of volunteers of faculty, students and staff.
On July 26, the Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee met with Rankin & Associates on campus to continue editing survey questions.
August – On August 10, the subcommittee held another round of fact-finding sessions. The rest of the month, the subcommittee members reviewed and edited survey drafts continued based on initial findings of fact-finding session themes.
Sseptember – The Campus Climate Survey Subcommittee completed its survey work based on themes identified by the focus groups conducted during the summer. Rankin & Associates is preparing an online version and print copies of the survey.
October – A second DAC promotions committee will launch an educational and informational campaign this month. A weeklong program of films, panel discussions and music will coincide with the launch of the survey starting Oct. 24.
