The Achievements page on Ramapo College's Web site has been renamed Campus Connection.  This new format will still provide updates of accomplishments by faculty, staff and students and also offer an opportunity to include photographs.  In addition, Campus Connection will keep readers apprised of new staff, promotions, reclassifications and retirements.

COLLEGE NEWS

Nominations for the President's Staff Recognition Program were accepted through April 15 The program is designed to recognize excellence and extraordinary effort by Ramapo College employees For more information on the categories of recognition, as well as the nomination form, please visit the Campus Communications page, and select the Staff Recognition Program link.

A recruitment brochure developed by the Marketing and Communications Department won a Merit Award in the 24th Annual Admissions Marketing Award Competition sponsored by "Admissions Marketing Report." The Admissions Marketing Award is the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country This year, more than 2,000 entries were received from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries.

In addition, the College's student recruitment DVD won a Bronze Telly Award. The Telly Awards competition received more than 13,000 entries. This competition's judges are comprised of top advertising and video production professionals. Ad agencies, production companies, TV stations, cable companies, interactive agencies and corporations from around the world submitted entries.

Events and Conferences is now part of the Department of Marketing and Communications, reporting to Anna Farneski, assistant vice president.

Photo: Jeremy GellerJeremy Geller (Roukema Center for International Education) led a panel, "The Space Between Us All: The Nexus of International and Multicultural Learning" at the annual conference of the Forum on Education Abroad in Portland, Oregon in February. He is co-chair of the Curriculum Development and Academic Design Committee of the Forum Council, an elected advisory body of the Forum.

Photo: Risa P. GorelickRisa P. Gorelick (AIS) chaired the Research Network Forum at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in San Francisco in March. More than 200 composition/rhetoric scholars attended the preconvention forum; 169 people had speaking roles. The program can be viewed on www.rnfonline.com. Gorelick also presented "Argument Writing in a Fast Food Nation" at the conference.

Henri Lustiger-Thaler (SSHS) organized a conference, "Witnessing: Sites of Destruction and the Representation of the Holocaust," in cooperation with the Fortunof Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies of Yale University. The conference took place at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial Museum in Loheide, Germany in January and was showcased in the "Arts and Culture" section of the January 21 edition of "The New York Times." The professor also published an article, "The Holocaust List and the Memorial Museum" in "Museum and Society" Volume 6, No 3. Additionally, he signed a contract with Yale University Press for a book, "The Empty Chair: Ultra Orthodox Memory and the Holocaust."

Nicole Pacheco, Carolina E. Pérez, and Nicole Baker (all EOF) presented "Titled Mosaic Thinking: Utilizing Partnerships to Create a Whole Student" at the Tri-State Consortium of Opportunity Programs held in Galloway Township, New Jersey in March. The focus of the presentation was the importance of institutional partnerships and collaborations for engagement inside and outside of the classroom. This conference gathered professionals from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to discuss topics related to educational opportunity programs. Carolina E. Pérez presented a workshop, "Who Are Our Students and Their Parents" at the consortium. (photos above)

Photo: Sensei by Siena Gillann Porta"KARATEKA" a solo exhibit of paintings by Siena Gillann Porta (CA) was exhibited at the Noho Gallery in New York this past fall. She also curated "Planet in Crisis" at the Azarian - Mc Cullough Gallery on the campus of St.Thomas Aquinas College that featured the work of 18 artists. The artist has two concurrent outdoor sculpture exhibitions, one at New Jersey City University on view through September 2009 and the other at Salem Art Park, outside of Albany, New York. 

Photo: Untitled by Matthew SwartsWork by Matthew Swarts (CA) will be featured in a group exhibition, "Syntax," part of the Boston Cyberarts Festival at the Photographic Resource Center through May 10. Info: bostoncyberarts.org. Swarts, who is from Somerville, Massachusetts, melded high-resolution scans of his drawings and doodles that he then transformed in Photoshop and overlaid over family photographs. 

Photo: Lorne WeemsLorne Weems (EOF) co-presented "Opportunity Program Leadership Revisited: Assessing Best Practices for Future Leadership Paradigms" at the Leadership Institute for the Tri-State Consortium of Opportunity Programs in Higher Education. His workshop focused on the evolutionary nature of leadership styles, practical components, nature of campus collaborations and positive public images of educational opportunity programs.

STUDENT AND ALUMNI NEWS

Michael R. DiBartolomeo (Admissions) reports that 63 teams comprised of more than 600 individuals participated in Relay For Life at the Bradley Center. More than $50,500 was raised for the Relay. Team Arce, named after student Daniel Arce who passed away last year, raised more than $6,300 in his name. That was second only to the amount raised by Colleges Against Cancer. DiBartolomeo said collaboration between Mahwah Police, Public Safety, the Relay for Life Committee and students contributed to the event’s success.

Jeff Gluck, a student in Breanne Trammel’s (CA) "Visual Identity Class" won a silver juror's award in the American Institute of Graphic Arts design competition. His work can be viewed by logging on to: Flickr.

Carolina E. Pérez (EOF) reports that EOF students Chikara Iwuagwu, Storm Flowers, Anthony Harris, Vanessa Holloman, Laura Vanessa Arias and Alexandra Melendez represented Ramapo College at the New Jersey State Capitol on March 16. Pérez said they met several legislators and inquired about issues affecting opportunity programs.

CA alumnus Kevin Sebastian, (formerly Kevin Perticelli), received a favorable review in "The New York Times" for his play, "Sick." The review can be read by linking to The New York Times.

Hsu-nami, a band composed of Ramapo students and alumni Tony Aichele,

Brent Bergholm, Dana Goldberg, Jack Hsu, John Manna and Derril Sellers, released a new album, "The Four Noble Truths." The band hosted an album release show in March in New York City. The album was released as a digital download at CD Baby, iTunes and other major music Web sites

Rajesh Adhikari has joined Ramapo College as assistant director for International Student and Scholar Services in the Roukema Center for International Education.
