Ramapo College was named a 2011-2012 Best Value Public College by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. The College was ranked at 48 for in-state tuition on a list including 100 institutions. Rankings cite four-year schools that combine outstanding education with economic value. This is the seventh consecutive year that Ramapo has been included on the list.
The New Jersey State Senate officially confirmed the appointment of William Dator to the Ramapo College of New Jersey Board of Trustees in December. A resident of Mahwah, Dator has been a real estate broker for more than 30 years and is a NJ licensed real estate appraiser. He played a critical role in determining the location of the College when he proposed the Stephen Birch estate as a possible site. Dator and his wife, Linda, are supporters of the Ramapo College Foundation, Distinguished Citizens Dinner, Golf Outing, and the Havemeyer Edible Garden. Dator will replace Gail Brady who has served on the Board since 1993.
Beginning in the fall 2012 semester, the College will offer its new MBA program designed to help graduate students effect change in a business and globally-oriented environment. The accelerated program is designed for students to earn a degree in 20 months while engaging in real-world consulting assignments.
The Ramapo College Foundation has announced the recipients of its 30th Annual Distinguished Citizens Award. The recipients are Kristine Denning ’90, a partner in the Harwood Lloyd law firm, Richard A. De Silva, owner of Liberty Subaru and MV-1 in Emerson and Liberty Hyundai in Mahwah, also a member of the Foundation’s Board of Governors, Kevin Lobo, group president of Orthopaedics, Stryker Corporation in Mahwah, and Thomas Shara, president and CEO of Lakeland Bancorp and Lakeland Bank in Oak Ridge, who also serves on the Board of Governors.
Changes have been made to parking procedures. Effective Monday, January 23, the B-1, B-2 and B-3 parking lots are to be used only by vehicles with a valid Ramapo College Commuter Parking Permit. Vehicles without a valid permit will be issued a violation. Current students, faculty and staff who need to register a vehicle or obtain a parking permit should visit www.thepermitstore.com or visit the Department of Public Safety, Identification Room.

Professor of Clinical Psychology and Faculty Assembly President James Morley, contributed a chapter to the "Routledge Encyclopedia of Phenomenology" (2011). The Encyclopedia is an international anthology of authorities in the interdisciplinary field of phenomenology, the descriptive science of how people subjectively experience the world. Professor Morley’s chapter discusses the history, philosophy, and empirical methodology used in Phenomenological Psychology.
Professor of Plant Ecology Eric Karlin headed a team of researchers who discovered that the entire Hawaiian population of the peat moss Sphagnum palustre appears to be a clone in existence for about 50,000 years. The findings were published online in December by the New Phytologist and appeared in National Geographic. Data essential to the discovery was provided by Professor Karlin from a study published in The Bryologist. In addition, former Ramapo students Melissa Giusti ’09 and Rebecca Lake ’09 were credited as secondary authors of the previous study. Student Falon Cartwright ’08 also gained experience with genetic analysis when she visited the Duke Bryology Lab.
Professor of Finance Murray Sabrin was the guest speaker at Felician College’s “Leadership & Innovation” speakers’ series on December 8 in Rutherford, NJ. Professor Sabrin presented “Managing in an Era of Financial Instability.”

Twenty-three faculty members from the College’s five schools and library presented a topic related to their discipline between 2010 and 2011 during the Havemeyer House Faculty Dinner Series. The series was created by President Peter P. Mercer, his wife, Dr. Jacqueline Ehlert-Mercer and Provost Beth Barnett, in the spring of 2010. Senior Elyse Toribio ’12 was among the 24 students selected by the New York Times Student Journalism Institute who participated in its annual program with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) from January 2 to 16 at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The two-week program grants students the opportunity to hone their writing, reporting, editing, photography, and multimedia skills while covering current events in the Tucson area.
Senior Brendan Flanagan ’12 was accepted to participate in the International Studies Association’s (ISA) annual Human Rights Conference at the University of Glasgow in Scotland this June. Flanagan will present his Senior Honor’s Project, “Applying Insight from Recent Transitional Justice Scholarship to the Northern Irish Case,” alongside today’s leading international scholars in human rights.

The first of six presentations in the Creating a Sustainable World: Voices of Key Practitioners lecture series, titled “Empowering Women as Prerequisite for Global Peace and Sustainable Development” will be held on February 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Robert A. Scott Student Center. (SC-219). The presentation will feature Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment and Senior Advisor to the Administrator at the United States Agency for International Development Carla Sunshine Koppell.
On Saturday, February 11, the star of “Jersey Boys”, Jarrod Spector, will present “Minor Lift, Major Fall” at 8 p.m. in the Berrie Center’s Sharp Theater. On Tuesday, February 14, the Readings at Ramapo Visiting Writers Series will feature acclaimed Poet Terrance Hayes in a Q&A session from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a poetry reading from 7 to 8 p.m. Both events will be held in the Trustees Pavilion. On Sunday, February 19, the Hawthorne Symphony, along with Conductor John Minkoff, will perform at 3 p.m. in the Berrie Center’s Sharp Theater. The Symphony is comprised of 40 music professionals from the metropolitan area and features top guest soloists. On Wednesday, February 22, “Studies in Character: The Eastwood Factor” will be presented at 2 p.m. Executive Vice President and General Manager of Warner Brothers Home Video Theatrical Catalog Jeffrey Baker will lead a discussion about the movie industry and a documentary following Eastwood’s life and work will be shown. Admission is free.
On Sunday, February 26, Jazz at the Berrie Center presents The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra at 7 p.m. in the Sharp Theater. Since 1935, the orchestra has won more awards than any other big band in jazz, including 17 Grammys and 20 Downbeat and Jazz Times polls. On Wednesday, March 7 the Sabrin Center for Business Excellence presents former insider trader Garrett Bauer in a discussion detailing the dangers of insider trading at 1 p.m. in the Trustees Pavilion. Bauer recently pleaded guilty to insider trading, obstruction of justice, and money laundering and faces as much as 25 years in prison. Commencement 2012 will be held on Wednesday, May 16 at the Prudential Center in Newark at 10 a.m. This is a change to the College’s Academic Calendar, as the College reconsidered arrangements for Commencement after consulting student and College personnel. The move to the Prudential Center will increase guest attendance and avoid issues related to parking deficiencies and inclement weather.
