For: gardeners, writers, naturalists, environmentalists

Summer is the perfect time to experience gardens in the Garden State. Beginning and expert writers and gardeners will read, discuss and write about nature. Explore areas of individual interest, challenges and successes, or use your imagination to create a secret garden. Plants, cultivation, garden design, and the history, romance, and purpose of gardens are all fertile topics worthy of exploration. The focus of this 8-week writing workshop is to share your personal gardening experiences and learn from others. Group activities will be based on the gardening interests of participants.

We will explore a variety of writing techniques used by experienced writers:

  • Free association and writing about personal experiences with plants and gardens
  • Writing and discussion to plan or re-envision your garden
  • Journaling about and discussing garden beauty, aesthetics, pleasures, memories, reflections and the rewards
  • Examination of gardening imagination, spirit, art, self-exploration, therapy, nurturing
  • Writing a culminating piece, such as a gardening essay, poem, or short story
