About the Major

The Social Work major prepares students for a profession dedicated to assisting individuals, groups, families, and communities in their quest for well-being. Social workers are committed to the development of a society that values human diversity and promotes equality, justice, and adequate sustenance for all its members. The social work profession is steeped in the belief that every person should be treated with dignity and respect and that the social worker’s goal is to help maximize each individual’s potential for human fulfillment.

The Social Work major is offered by the School of Social Science and Human Services and leads to a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree. The Social Work program’s principal educational goal is to prepare students for beginning generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The program also provides preparation for graduate social work education. The Social Work curriculum, taken in conjunction with the School of Social Science and Human Services core program is designed to provide students with an understanding of social issues, social theory, research methods, individual and community needs, social services, social policy, social work values and ethics, and the attainment of social work skills needed for generalist practice in a culturally diverse society. Supervised field work is a major component of the Social Work curriculum. Over a two year period, students work in field placements that are designed to teach generalist social work practice skills and to integrate Social Work theory with professional practice. The Social Work program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Students may also co-major or minor in a second field such as psychology, sociology, economics, political science, and minor in the areas of gerontology, women’s studies, African-American Studies, ethic studies, and substance abuse.

Students who wish to enter the Social Work program must file an application with the Program Director during the second semester of their sophomore year. Students should satisfactorily complete MSWK 222 History and Philosophy of Social Welfare and MSWK 225 Social Field Work with a "B" average, and the program’s other prerequisites by the end of the academic year in which they apply for admission into the program. Additionally, a minimum 2.5 GPA and completion of 60 credits, including the program prerequisites, are required for admittance into the program. An interview with a social work faculty member may be required. A faculty committee will review admission applications and, based on the above criteria and the student’s suitability for the social work profession, will grant qualified students acceptance into the major. Once admitted into the program, students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in the Social Work major to remain in the program.

Prior life experience credit (PLEX) is not granted for any course in the professional foundation curriculum. Transfer credit will not be granted for any course in the professional foundation curriculum unless it was earned in another B.S.W. program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

A minor is not available.
