Produced Off-Broadway by New York’s Double Image Repertory Company, this play moves from comedy to near tragedy as it explores the hopes and dreams of a group of rootless young "losers" who congregate in an anonymous Bronx bar, hoping to find respite from the drabness of their lives as they search purpose in an often purposeless world.

“Conceived with sharp insight into the lives of losers, conveyed with a frisky and often hilarious wit.”

“Our Father Who Art Blakey”
Valery Ponomarev and Alumni of the Jazz Messengers

Saturday, March 15
8 p.m., Sharp Theater

The late legendary drummer Art Blakey discovered Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomorev in the mid-70’s and made him a member of the Jazz Messengers, a band whose legacy is  not only the exceptionally fine music it produced, but as a proving ground for several generations of jazz musicians.

After four years and 11 albums with the band, Valery set out on his own, ushering in a young Wynton Marsalis to replace him.

Now he pays tribute to Blakey with a group of Messenger alumni, who bring the music of this jazz icon to the Berrie Center.

Recess: Man of God, Man of War
Documentary and Talk by Prof. Brian Hughes

Tuesday, March 18
1 p.m., Sharp Theater

"While some are called to serve God, others are called to serve their country.
Those who serve both are known as Army Chaplains."
The statement above, found in current recruiting literature for the United States Army, shows the unusual position of military chaplains: men and women trained as clergy from almost every organized religion who don military uniforms and accompany troops into combat. These military officers are trained in military tactics, but then are sent as spiritual leaders to serve a community of warriors. Ramapo Audio and Sound Design Assoc. Professor Brian Hughes explores the history, traditions and modern practice of military chaplains in this multi-media documentary short.
