Saturday, March 15 The late legendary drummer Art Blakey discovered Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomorev in the mid-70’s and made him a member of the Jazz Messengers, a band whose legacy is not only the exceptionally fine music it produced, but as a proving ground for several generations of jazz musicians. After four years and 11 albums with the band, Valery set out on his own, ushering in a young Wynton Marsalis to replace him. Now he pays tribute to Blakey with a group of Messenger alumni, who bring the music of this jazz icon to the Berrie Center.
