Indian Life and Culture – SOCI 305

Pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial Indian history will be taught, including contemporary political and economic issues, caste and contemporary gender roles, cultural anthropology, as well as the beliefs and traditions of Hinduism and Islam.

Development Issues – SOCI 333

History of development theories and approaches since independence; government planning and private enterprise; development policy; land rights; rural development and Gandhian principles of technology; multinational partnerships; women’s cooperative movement; etc.

Media, Justice and Social Movements – SOCI 208

Adivasis and minority rights issues: partition and the history of Hindu-Muslim conflict, contemporary human rights issues; and major environmental issues.

Independent Study Project – SOCI 409

A course in the concepts of learning across cultures; ethics in field study; interviewing; communicating data; etc. Possible (fieldwork ONLY) study projects include: village case studies; family planning and child health; identity and the Indian novel; Indian culture and human rights issues; and many more.
