The Fireflies Semester Course Outline
Culture, Peace and Development
4th January - 7th April 2008

Friday, 4th January
Arrival / welcome / rest
(Breakfast and lunch at any convenient time. Dinner will be at 7.30 pm)
Evening : Visit the Cow Ashram/weaving centre

Saturday, 5th January
Morning :  Explaining Fireflies and walking around.
: General information on the semester
  • Self introduction at the Tulsi Circle
  • Introducing Pipal Tree
  • Introducing key instructors
  • Discussion on cultural ‘Dos and Donts’ (dress code, ways of greeting, possible areas of cultural miscommunications, etc.)
  • Guidelines on health, hygiene precautions
  • Explaining dietary regime
  • Explaining trips into town (bus timings and maps)

: Introducing the Semester Programme

  • Interaction with faculty members: Trent Schroyer, John Clammer, Siddhartha, Susan Hangen and Ruma Sen “What do we expect to get out of the semester?”
  • Explaining the course outline
  • Explaining class schedule at Fireflies. The mornings will comprise two sessions with a tea break in between. Except on a few days afternoon sessions will be devoted to readings from the Fireflies Reader and writing of assignments.
    • 1st session: 10:00 am – 11:30 am
    • 2nd session: 11.45 am – 01.15 pm
  • Break - Sunday
  • Breakfast - 08.00 am; Morning tea - 11.30 am; Lunch - 01.15 pm; Evening tea - 04.00 pm; Dinner - 07.30 pm
  • Formation of a Sangham (informal association of students and faculty) to monitor and assess the processes, evaluate trips, deal with inter-personal problems, create a convivial climate etc.
  • Course related films (feature/documentary)
  • Daily yoga classes by experienced teacher.
  • Sports and fun: Basketball, swimming, chess, scrabble
  • The creative urge: Pottery, weaving, photo-club, organic gardening, writing, literature, etc.

Evening : Dinner with the Chief Justice of Karnataka State, the Honourable Cyriac Joseph.
Guests will include Prof.Anantamurthy, one of India’s great writers; Dr.Dilip Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests; Mr.A.R.Infant, additional Director General of Police; Dr.Siddalingiah, a well known Dalit (untouchable) poet; Ramchandra Guha, well known historian.

Evening : Discussion on the village visits
: Screening of a documentary on ‘Jenu Kuruba Tribals of H.D. Kote’
