Registrar's Office: General Information

Change of Major Request

A student may change his/her major at any time during the semester by obtaining a Major Change Request form from the Registrar’s Office or follow link below. This form must be completed by the student and signed by the Convener of the Major being requested, then returned to the Registrar’s Office.

Change of Name and/or Address

It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Registrar’s Office of a name and/or address change. A name change must be accompanied by a copy of a legal document authorizing the change. It is imperative that the Registrar’s Office be notified of all address changes so that registration notices and other important mailings are sent to the correct address.
Instructor Permission Courses

Matriculated students desiring to register for courses which require "permission of instructor" must obtain permission of the instructor from the instructor of the course. This override will be electronically noted on the student’s record to facilitate web registration. After obtaining the override, students must register on the Web for the course (see link below). Please contact the appropriate unit secretary for assistance with this procedure, if needed.

Off-Campus Study

Students wishing to take courses at another institution for a semester MUST obtain written approval on an Off-Campus Study Form in the Advisement Center.

ID Numbers

Student ID numbers (referred to as R numbers) are system generated eight digit number preceded by an R which is part of the ID.  This number along with a PIN (6 digit personal identification number) allows electronic access to the student information system for registration, account payment and review, transcript and degree evaluation review and a host of other functions requiring authentication.  These identifiers are provided to current students at Ramapo College of New Jersey for conducting business.

Key information about R numbers and PINs:

  • Initially your PIN is your date of birth (mmddyy) but once you enter it this PIN expires and you must reset it to any 6 numbers, but NOT your date of birth.
  • Your R number and PIN are the keys to your records-do not give your access to anyone else. You may need to give your R number to a faculty or staff member if you are requesting an override for a course.
  • All student R number and PIN inquiries are to be made at the Registrar’s Office.
  • R number and PIN will not be given over the telephone.
  • Students must show a Ramapo ID card to obtain R number and PIN information in the Registrar’s Office.
  • R number and PIN information WILL NOT be given to anyone but the student.
  • If you are unable to come to the Registrar’s Office to present positive identification for R number and PIN information during business hours, please email us at registrar@ramapo.edu from your Ramapo.edu email account.
Please contact the Registrar’s Office with further questions at 201-684-7695.

Prerequisite Courses

It is the student’s responsibility to satisfactorily complete a prerequisite course before registering for a course with such a requirement. Please review the course descriptions on our web site to be sure you have the required prerequisites. Course descriptions are found at Web for Students, Course/Catalog Description.

[Web For Students]

If you are a transfer student and believe that you have fulfilled the prerequisite, but cannot register for a course because the system does not recognize your prerequisite, you should contact the school that offers the course. If you prove that you have satisfied the prerequisite, the unit secretary may place an "override" on your records. This allows you to register for the course, but does not automatically enroll you. You must then go to www.ramapo.edu/register and complete your registration.

Readmission

A matriculated student who voluntarily interrupts his or her college study at Ramapo for two or more consecutive semesters must apply for readmission to the College before resuming study. Students seeking readmission following a one-year academic suspension should refer to the Academic Standing policy section of the Catalog for readmission criteria. The application for readmission is available in the Admissions Office by calling (201) 684-7300 or by e-mail at admissions@ramapo.edu, or online.

[Online Application]

Matriculated students who stop-out for one semester will be permitted to register during Priority Registration on the Web, therefore it is important to report any change of address to the Registrar’s Office.

Retaking Courses

Students may retake up to three courses during their College careers; no one course may be taken more than two times. These three courses are limited to the following two categories: (a) courses in the major in which the lowest grades were received and (b) courses that have been designated by the major convening group as especially important to the major, regardless of the original grade. In such cases, when a course is completed a second time, the first and second grades are averaged into the GPA, although the credits are only counted once towards graduation. Exceptions may only be approved by the VPAA. This policy is not to be confused with the College’s existing Repeat Grade policy. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that he/she is in compliance with stated policies. Courses taken inappropriately will be excluded from consideration in the student’s GPA.
