Summer Session Middle School Preparation for Elementary Education Candidates
Why Middle School Certification?
Obtaining Middle School Teacher Certification broadens the elementary education teachers’ job prospects because the K-5 elementary teacher market is a highly competitive one. School districts find the addition of the middle school certification appealing because it allows the districts greater job placement flexibility as their needs change. Middle School endorsement also provides teachers with content knowledge within the K-5 environment, which affords candidates an edge in the teacher job marketplace.
To obtain an endorsement to teach middle school in New Jersey a student pursuing the elementary education certification needs the following:
- One course in Adolescent Psychology
- 15 credits in one of the middle school endorsement areas (Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, or Science)
- The appropriate Praxis II exam
Students in the program need to confirm that, through their General Education curriculum, they have at least one course in the designated middle school endorsements. The aim of this summer program is to complete the additional needed courses to qualify for the endorsement and, through mandatory seminars, focus on issues critical to middle school teaching.
Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion from the Teacher Education and Certification Program for their employment portfolio. We will also note the completion of this program on the student’s transcript. Guidance will be provided for students to successfully apply to the state of New Jersey for Middle School certification once their Elementary certification program is complete.
To successfully complete the Summer ’08 program, all students must take (in Summer I):
PSYC 215 Adolescent Psychology, Summer I, 6-9:20 pm
