Professor Lisa Lutter conducting a performance of Songs of Children, "The Terezin Cantata," by Ramapo College's CantaNova Chorale at a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) commemoration held under the auspices of the Czech Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate General in New York, in cooperation with the Center of Holocaust and Genocide Studies of the Ramapo College. The event was held at the Bohemian National Hall, New York City in the presence of Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer on April 11, 2010 and was attended by more than 350 guests, including 27 U.N. ambassadors. Robert Convery's "Terezin Cantata" is the setting to music of a series of nine poems written by children from Terezin Ghetto/Concentration Camp who later were murdered in the Nazi killing centers of the East. |

Explores Rescue and Resistance in Genocide
Dr. Paul Winkler, Executive Director of the New Jersey State Commission on Holocaust Education, provided the rationale for teaching about rescue and resistance in genocide education at the May 17, 2010 Gumpert Workshop, held at Ramapo College. |
The keynote speaker was Dr. Mordecai Paldiel, former Director of the Righteous Among the Nations program at Yad Vashem, who spoke about "Rescue and Resistance in the Holocaust: What Lessons Can Be Learned?" |
Frances Flannery, who teaches Social Studies at Sount Plainfield High School, shared strategies and provided tips on instructing students about resistance and rescue in genocide. |
Mr. Charles Roman of Teaneck, New Jersey, who together with his mother was able to avoid capture by the Nazi authorities and local collaborators in France and Italy thaks to the help of nuns, priests, Jewish social workers, and ordinary people. |

November 9, 2008 - Remembrance and Awareness Event at the Times Center Includes Ramapo Singers
The Cantanova Singers and the Ramapo Chorale, under the direction of Professor Lisa Lutter (I.), after participating in the Remembrance and Awareness commemoration at the Times Center in New York City. Held on the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht (November 9, 1938), the pogrom in Germany that signaled a violent turn in the Third Reich's persecution of the Jews, the event brought together representatives from the international and faith communities in New York to renew their pledge to prevent a tragedy similar to the Holocaust from occurring again. The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Ramapo College was one of the program's co-sponsors. |

Professor Lisa Lutter conducting a performance of Songs of Children, "The Terezin Cantata," by Ramapo College's CantaNova Chorale at a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) commemoration held under the auspices of the Czech Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate General in New York, in cooperation with the Center of Holocaust and Genocide Studies of the Ramapo College. The event was held at the Bohemian National Hall, New York City in the presence of Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer on April 11, 2010 and was attended by more than 350 guests, including 27 U.N. ambassadors. Robert Convery's "Terezin Cantata" is the setting to music of a series of nine poems written by children from Terezin Ghetto/Concentration Camp who later were murdered in the Nazi killing centers of the East.

Dr. Paul Winkler, Executive Director of the New Jersey State Commission on Holocaust Education, provided the rationale for teaching about rescue and resistance in genocide education at the May 17, 2010 Gumpert Workshop, held at Ramapo College.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Mordecai Paldiel, former Director of the Righteous Among the Nations program at Yad Vashem, who spoke about "Rescue and Resistance in the Holocaust: What Lessons Can Be Learned?"
Frances Flannery, who teaches Social Studies at Sount Plainfield High School, shared strategies and provided tips on instructing students about resistance and rescue in genocide.
Mr. Charles Roman of Teaneck, New Jersey, who together with his mother was able to avoid capture by the Nazi authorities and local collaborators in France and Italy thaks to the help of nuns, priests, Jewish social workers, and ordinary people.

October 5, a group of survivors under the auspices of the “Café Europa” program of the Jewish Family Services of North Jersey visited “Varian Fry, Assigment:Rescue, 1940-41.”





Dr. Hassan Nejad, dean of AIS, welcoming participants he drew attention to role of Human Rights and Genocide education in helping to overcome the failings of the last century.

Dr. Michael A. Riff, director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, took on the task of presenting the goals, outcomes, issues, and opportunities of introducing primary sources into the classroom.
Barbara Wind, Director of Holocaust Council of MetroWest, made a strong case for "Eyewitnesses as Primary Sources," which is based on her program's model of "Survivors Speak" that teams the latter with experts who provide continuity and keep them on track.

Dr. Dennis Papazian, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a member of the New Jersey State Commission of Holocaust Education, delivering his talk "An Abundance of Proof: Archival Evidence and the Armenian Genocide," emphasized that there is much material in print as well as on the internet.

Toby Kansagor, supervisor of Social Studies and director of the REACH program in the Hilsborough School District, in her presentation, "Is a picture worth 1,000 words?" outlined a methodology for analyzing and deconstructing images of the Holocaust and other genocides to make them truly useful for students.

Florette Lynn, translator/editor and retired librarian, Hawthorne Public Schools, in her presentation, "Smashing the Stereotypes," explained to the teachers how a well annotated translation of a Yizkor [Memorial] Book, like the one she published about the Belerus town of Ivanets, helps teachers by depicting the everyday life of Jews before and during the Holocaust.
