Internet Resources

Since anyone can publish on the Internet, you need to make sure you are using reliable information. The following list contains free internet resources that have been reviewed by Potter librarians and are considered authoritative. For more help, check out the Guide to Evaluating Websites.

Arts
  • The Costume page Perhaps the most comprehensive site on costume on the Internet today, particularly useful for the performing arts.
  • Mark Harden’s Artchive Over 2300 images from more than 230 artists, both public domain and copyrighted, free to use up to 5-6 images for non-profit, education purposes. From ancient to contemporary/postmodern.
  • Writing About Art Prof. Munsterberg’s site explains the different approaches encountered in undergraduate art history classes. Each chapter outlines the characteristics of one type of visual or historical analysis, and briefly explains its history and development.
Astronomy
  • Astronomy Online Directory that contains links to information about space exploration.
  • Space Telescope Science InstituteMany photos and images from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as its history, current news/photos, and more.
  • Webstars–Astrophysics in Cyberspace A list of astronomical resource sites created by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for general interest users. Table of contents at the top of 1st webpage is clickable to the terms of interest, and further links in the text for each.
  • Welcome to the Planets A NASA site which offers images from its exploration, including smaller bodies (including comets), and the explorers themselves (Mariner, Viking, Magellan, etc. and the space shuttle). Links to “mirror sites” around the world.
  • Women in Astronomy Directory which can be accessed by alphabetical listing, geographic listing, scientific listing, or one can browse the entire list. Brief for each woman, highlighting her background and professional interests. Also includes Women and Science Relevant Web Links.
Business
  • NYSE New York Stock Exchange The oldest organized national stock exchange, with links to the companies listed, regulations, and more.
  • NASDAQ The first and largest electronic equity market, operated by the National Association of Securities Dealers. The companies listed tend to be smaller and younger than NYSE or AMEX.
  • Real Time Stock Quotes Stock quotes, but not realtime (subscriber only).
  • Standard & Poor’s Index The index, plus more data about it and other S&P indices.
  • U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission SEC’s homepage, with Edgar access and more.
  • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) The new government industry classification, plus a key as to how it relates to the old system, the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC).
  • Edgar Database of Corporate Information 10K, 10Q, and other SEC reports for companies.
  • Bureau of Economic, Energy, and Business Affairs The Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB) formulates and carries out U.S. economic policy and implements American economic policy in cooperation with U.S. companies, U.S. government agencies, and other organizations.
  • CSRwire Offers access to information on corporate social responsibility

  • Doing Business: Economy Rankings One hundred eighty-three economies (countries) are ranked on their ease of doing business according to the ten indicators listed, including starting a business, taxes, and contracts. Presented by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank.
  • Kwintessential Over 60 countries are profiled with regard to basic facts such as location, population, climate, ethnic and religious makeup, type of government, etc. For business purposes, dress, meeting and negotiation etiquette, along with cultural methods of communication, are presented. Additional links to currency, hotel accommodations, local news, etc, are provided.
  • Global Resource DirectoryThe Global Resource Directory offers a rich collection of thousands of international business- and trade-related resources, which we have selected for their content and usability and organized into the categories below to facilitate your research. Note: Not all resources are freely accessible.

  • Background Notes from the U.S. Department of State This site, from the Bureau of Public Affairs, contains the full-text to the “Background Notes” publications. Information is included on people, history, government, and political conditions from countries which the United States has relations.
  • International Affairs Resources, now with over 2000 carefully selected, annotated links in 37 international affairs categories. It is frequently maintained, and should be of use to faculty, students, journalists, researchers and businesspersons, among others.
  • Library of Congress Country Studies This website contains the online version of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army.
  • Africa Focus: Sights and Sounds of a Continent This site includes a selection of the images and sounds from the African Studies Program of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The collection includes images captured on slides and in photographs as well as sound recordings on reel-to-reel and audio cassette that have been reproduced and stored on digital files.
  • Foreign Information by Country This site allows you to search the University of Colorado at Boulders’ Libraries webpage for country information by governments, international organizations, portals, territory guides and more.
  • Eurostat: Your key to European statistics (European Commission) Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union. It provides statistics to enable comparisons between European countries and regions.

  • Resources for Economists (RFE) This site is maintained by the American Economic Association. This is the organization’s links page to outside information about economics. The links are organized by subject and include information on data sources, conferences, scholarly publications, teaching aids, and software.
  • U.S. Census–Economic Data Includes industry and company information, international trade, monthly changes in housing statistics, manufacturing, personal income, and much more.
  • Bureau of Economic, Energy, and Business Affairs The Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB) formulates and carries out U.S. economic policy and implements American economic policy in cooperation with U.S. companies, U.S. government agencies, and other organizations.
  • Economic Indicators (A) Is a monthly publication prepared by the Council of Economic Advisors, that offers information on business activity, credit, employment, federal finance, the gross domestic product, income, international statistics, prices, production, and security markets from 1995-present.
  • Economic Indicators (B) Is collected both by the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and gives data on 12 monthly and quarterly principle federal indicators: current account balances, new home sales, U.S. trade balances and much more.
  • Economic Indicators (FRASER) (C) Great for historical data and information back to 1948 through the Federal Reserve Archival System for Economic Research.
  • County Business Patterns Provides 2010 economic data on business establishments by industry, employment, and payroll for the national, state, county, and zip code levels within the U.S. Puerto Rico and the Island areas cover the state and county equivalent levels.
Education
  • Educator’s Reference Desk Search for citations to education-related journal articles and other documents. Also included, the Eric Clearinghouses offer diverse relevant subjects, and the InfoGuides and Lesson Plans are full-text, and all are searchable.
  • Teachers.net Site provides lots of great links to any type of curriculum subject, with websites links for those subjects, as well as links to lesson plan sources. Also offers weblinks to an endless variety of resources to the educator, anything from maps and dictionaries, to books and people finders and calculators/converters. Also searchable.
  • Education World Focuses on K – 12, offers materials on curriculum, lesson planning, model schools, and resources by discipline.
  • Teachers Helping Teachers Provides tips to inexperienced teachers, and a forum for all to share ideas and expertise. Includes lesson plans.
  • World Data on Education Features profiles on over 100 countries including government spending, enrollment, priorities and concerns, and more.
  • Making of America Materials accessible here are Cornell University Library’s contributions to Making of America(MOA), a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion and sciences and technology. This site provides access to 267 monograph volumes and over 100,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints

  • AirNow AirNow, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides real-time access to national and regional air quality information searchable by zip code.

  • Oscar.com A searchable database of every “Oscar” awarded since 1927, foundation and events information.
  • Film.com Reviews of current films, a listing of major awards and film festivals, interviews, filmclips, and news.
  • Movieweb.com Links to 23 studios, extensive lists by genre with actors, director, year, short synopsis, and more. Weekly box office figures and available videos are also noted.
  • Internet Movie Database Search by title, character, quote, people, biographies. Listings of top rentals, videos by genre, top films, worst films, movie & television news.
  • ScriptFly.com All kinds of information of interest to writers with an emphasis on film and screenwriting. Note: Most actors, directors, composers, and current films have their own websites. Just click on “Search the Web” and type name.

  • Central Intelligence Agency The nations first line of defense and author of many publications including the CIA Fact Book.
  • CIA World Factbook An online quick reference source to the history, people, government, economy, geography, communication, transportation and related information for 266 world countries.
  • The Department of Census Leading source that provides quality data about the nations people; population, housing, Economic Census, Census of Governments, American Community Survey, Economic Indicators and surveys on other demographics and economics.
  • Digital National Security Archive An independent non-governmental research institute and library located at The George Washington University, the Archive collects and publishes declassified documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. The Archive also serves as a repository of government records on a wide range of topics pertaining to the national security, foreign, intelligence, and economic policies of the United States.
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation Protects and defends the U.S. against terrorism and foreign intelligence threats, upholds and enforce U.S.criminal law. Compiles, publishes and archives data on crimes.
  • FEDSTATS Provides links to over 100 agencies by topic and statistical agencies to federal statistics.
  • Federal Digital System FDsys provides free online access to official United States government publications such as the Code of Federal Regulations, the Congressional Record, Federal Register, U.S. Code, Budget of the U.S. government and many more, going back to the mid-1990’s.
  • Internal Revenue Service Part of the Bureau of Treasury. Helps American tax payers understand and meet tax responsibilities by applying tax laws with integrity and fairness for all.
  • MetaLib MetaLib is a federated search engine that searches multiple U.S. Federal government databases, retrieving reports, articles, and citations while providing direct links to selected resources available online.
  • Tax Forms and Publications Provides links to tax forms, publications and other products available to American taxpayers from the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Social Security Online Official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration that offers information on retirement, medicare, social security earnings statements, disability benefits, forms, publications and other related resources.
  • THOMAS — U.S. Congress Great site to locate U.S. bills, resolutions, committee information, treaties, activities in Congress, Presidential Nominations, schedules, calendars and much much more.
  • United States Code The United States Code is a consolidation and codification by subject matter of the general and permanent laws of the United States. It is prepared by the Office of the Law Revision Counsel of the United States House of Representatives.
  • U.S. House of Representatives A good website to access what’s currently on the House Floor, U.S. Codes, Slip laws, finding bills or a debate, and voting information etc.
  • U.S. Senate Includes Senate information, biographies, active legislation, votes, sessions schedules, scheduled hearings, Senate Calendar, the daily digest and more.
  • USA.gov The official portal for the U.S. Government to 30 million government web pages by topic and agency to free U.S., local, state and federal information.
  • White House Online access to the Presidents Actions, Speeches, Addresses, Statements and Releases, Briefings, Featured Legislation, the Administration, the Government and more.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook Compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Occupational Outlook Handbook covers hundreds of occupations and describes What They Do, Work Environment, How to Become One, Pay, and more.

  • Hall Institute of Public Policy A non-partisan, not for profit foundation that explores social, economic, educational, and cultural issues.

Hispanic Studies
  • Handbook of Latin American Studies A bibliography on Latin America. The entries are selected and annotated by scholars in the field and edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress.
  • Latin American Network Information Center (LANIC) (*Loads extemely slowly) Affiliated with the Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at the University of Texas at Austin. This is a comprehensive site on Latin American studies.
History
  • American Memory Searches American primary sources, including early Congressional documents, the Declaration of Independence, The Federalist Papers, the Constitution, etc. Also offers documents, maps, motion pictures, photos & prints and sound recordings.
  • Digital National Security Archive An independent non-governmental research institute and library located at The George Washington University, the Archive collects and publishes declassified documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.   • M.E. Sharpe Primary Source Documents Lists over 400 historic U.S. documents by time period beginning with colonial to present, provided by publisher M.E. Sharpe. Documents are digital scans with accompanying Word doc transcripts.

  • The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies Georgetown University site provides access to resources, including articles, bibliographies,organizations and more.
  • HyperHistory Online Offers timeline formats (with some text) of people, history and maps from early civilizations to the present, and year-by-year events in science, culture, religion, and politics.
  • Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture A national research library devoted to collecting, preserving and providing access to resources documenting the experiences of peoples of African descent throughout the world.
  • Perseus Digital Library The Perseus Digital Library, developed at Tufts University, remains a worthwhile source for anyone involved with classical studies.

  • Human Rights Internet Information about the topic, plus current publications, children’s rights, UN and human rights organizations active internationally. Also provides good links to other websites.
  • Human Rights Web Home Page Action alerts, documents and resources such as UN documents, treaties, asylum and refugee materials, with links to other websites and more.
  • The Southern Poverty Law Center The Southern Poverty Law Center monitors hate groups and other extremists throughout the U.S. and exposes their activities to law enforcement agencies, the media and the public.

  • Code of Federal Regulations Provides access to the Code of Federal Regulations(CFR), Federal Register, Public Laws, the U.S. Government Manual and more.
  • NJ Law Network: All aspects of NJ law included–opinions, rules, NJ Courts, NJ Statutes, and much more. The home page also features a news ticker of NJ law in action.
  • NJ State Legislature: Includes the NJ Constitution, Bills, Chapter Laws, and Statutes.
  • Laws of New York
  • Rutgers University School of Law, Camden: The Law School’s home page with a link (on the side bar) to the library, which has searchable links to Federal and NJ documents and laws, as well as the Law Library catalog.
  • Supreme Court of the United States: This official site includes an historical overview, a listing of members from 1789, access to 1999 term opinions (with more to come), visitors’ guides, links to related sites, and general information.
  • United States Copyright Office: This official site for U.S. copyright law includes links to international copyright information.
  • Ramapo College Copyright and Duplication Policy: Text of Board of Trustees Policy.
Literature and Languages
  • American Verse Project Electronic archive of volumes of American poetry prior to 1920.
  • Internet Classics Archive Collection of over 400 searchable Greek and Roman texts in English translation. Also includes a few ancient Chinese and Persian works.
  • Literary Resources on the Net Annotated list of scholarly links, organized by time period from classical through 20th century, including theater and drama, ethnicities, women and feminism.
  • Norton Anthology of American Literature Directed at students, offers biographical and bibliographic information on 120 authors, including indigenous peoples. Timelines for seven time periods lists titles in their historical contexts.
  • IPL2 Literary Criticism Collection Over 2000 critical and biographical websites about authors and their works, easily browsed by author, title, nationality, and literary period.
  • Project Gutenberg The site offers literary and other materials full-text for reading or downloading; the latter may require some time to effect. An ever-growing source of documents, self-described as being either light literature, heavy literature or reference work, and has enormous potential, Gutenberg plans to have over 10,000 books available electronically.
  • Ethnologue This standard directory of languages of the world serves programs in linguistics, anthropology, geography or area studies.
  • iLoveLanguages! A comprehensive catalog of language-related Internet resources with more than 2400 links to online language lessons, translating dictionaries, native literature, translation services, software, language schools, etc. Formerly known as The Human-Languages Page .
  • Storytellers Native American Authors Online This site provides a straightforward list of Web pages for many contemporary Native American authors and is one of the best sites for Native American literature.
  • The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Calling itself “the Web’s first edition of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare ,” it also offers a searchable concordance and links to other Shakespeare resources on the Internet which take the user to texts, courses, secondary materials and film festivals.
  • AuthorLinks/LitLinks This site, from Bedford/St. Martin’s Press, offers suggested links to information on poetry, plays, short stories, and critical articles. The site is organized by genre.

  • Soundtrack.net This film and television music industry website includes a searchable database of film soundtracks, a link to a database of reviews of movie soundtracks, a database of composer’s discographies, listings of directors, manufacturers and studios, and more.
  • International Alliance for Women in Music Includes the text of articles the organization has published, discographies, biographical information, information on early women composers, a detailed “webliography” which lists resources on all aspects of music, resources for composers, and more
  • New York Public Library – Selected Music Resources on the Internet for the Performing Arts Comprehensive categorized list of music links. Covers music libraries, New York concert schedules, song lyrics, sheet music, e-journals, women in music, classical, popular and ethnic music, music publishing, professional organizations and more
  • The Red Hot Jazz Archive It includes more than 1,000 significant recordings along with biographies and other information. This site, which is being continually expanded, is a superb resource for jazz history and American studies courses.

  • CNBC National Broadcasting Network’s business website.
  • CNN Interactive Cable News Network (CNN) website, offering timely news.
  • C-SPAN.Org Public affairs programming, spanning 20 years.
  • C-SPAN Video Library Digital video archive of every C-SPAN program aired since 1987. Programs are searchable by subject, speaker names, titles, affiliations, sponsors, committees, categories, formats, policy groups, keywords, and location.
  • National Public Radio NPR’s website, offering access to their variety of news shows, some text, some audio.

  • Television news archive: Vanderbilt University An index to and source for the world’s most extensive collection of network television news, Vanderbilt’s Television News Archive is a unique primary resource for studying the history of the latter part of the 20th century.

  • American Political Science Association : Founded in 1903, the APSA is the leading professional organization for the study of political science. It serves more than 15,000 members in over 80 countries.
  • Politicalinformation.com: A search engine that offers an abundance of sources and keeps tabs on information offered on some 5,000 selected Websites devoted to politics and political news.
  • The League of Women Voters: A nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
  • Project Vote Smart: A national citizen’s organization that provides a library of information — biographies, positions on issues, voting records, campaign finances, and interest group ratings — on thousands of candidates and elected officials.
  • Writing in Political Science: Guide for students prepared by The Writing Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
